Clan Gathering

The Register of McGillycuddys around the World indicates that some real-time fun could be had by seniors of the clan taking a leaf out of Gene and Kathleen’s book.

The register so far reveals 126 McGillycuddys in Ireland, 87 in USA, 48 in England, 25 in Australia and New Zealand, 8 in SO. Africa, 7 in Canada and 2 each in Scotland, Uruguay, and Switzerland.

Put a 6-pack or two of favoured national beverage into the fridge and invite around a few soul mates bearing either the sept or clan blood.

Pick a date like the nearest Saturday to St. Patrick’s Day and make a mailing list of those who ought to come along to a central venue.

Cost out some entertainment and food and put the cash in the bank, on interest, until you have to part with it. All that you need is a Chairman like Gene, a scribe like Kathleen and an accountant as good as the

Philip that Killorglin lost awhile back. A hearty vocal rendering of Slattery's Mounted Foot and We're off to Dublin in the green should alert neighbours that there is some genuine Irish craic taking place next door. The Irish National Anthem is:

Sol-diers are we,

whose lives are pledged to Ire-land;

some have come from a land be-yond the wave.

Sworn to be free, no more our anc-ient shire-land.

Shall she-lter the des-pot or the slave.

To-night we man the 'bear-na baoil*

In erin's cause, come woe or weal,

Mid-can-on's roar and ri-fles peal,

We'll chant a sol-dier's song.

* Trans. Gap of danger.

Such an idea keeps alive the ability of local members of the tribe to gather in Killorglin at a time and venue of their own choosing as frequently or infrequently as the mood takes them.

An international golf tournament is being set up by Kevin McGillycuddy in Dublin kmcgillycuddy@brehoncapital.com to take place in the months up to August 2010. Golfing McGillycuddys all over the world are to set up their own local tournament to select the best golfer of the sept. Scores will be filed at Dooks, near Killorglin, where McGillycuddys have played golf for over a century.

A local McGillycuddy, or a member of the Dooks club will be drawn to represent each country or province making an entry. Final rounds will be played at Dooks in August culminating with a gathering of both golfing and non-golfing McGillycuddys.

A Skype 4 video link will be used during the gathering to link up as many McGillycuddys as possible around the world.

When a New Zealander gets a call at sin in the morning from a Kerry cousin calling from Dooks at 18:00 hrs. he/she'll know its time to get up and go to work. The Kerry-cousin will still have a lot of craic to enjoy. Keep your eye on Donough McGillycuddy's Facebook blog for further details and contact Kevin for organisational matters.

McGillycuddys and those married to them possess cultural and characteristic traits and a descent without parallel in the World.

Nobody can deprive the sept of the name linked to Ireland’s highest mountains. Whiskey can be poured from a bottle with far greater ease than hereditary identity can be drawn from a McGillycuddy.

A Kerryman beats a Corkman and the rest of the World every day. A clan serves the human need of 'belonging'. The more that life's needs are satisfied, the better the quality of life.

Those who gather together as a clan, sept or tribe will have their lives enriched by the fun they have, the history they learn, the friendships they establish and the spirit of love and hope enshrined in our motto: Sursum Corda.
